River Expedition

Rafting in "May Kha River" of Myanmar Himalaya

May Kha and Mali Kha rivers flow through Myanmar Himalaya in the north of the country and meet near Myit Gyi Nar (the capital of Kachin State) to become the Aye-yar-waddy River, probably the most important river of Myanmar. (Also see luxury cruises on the main Aye-yar-waddy River)

May Kha River is classified as Class 5-6 white water for Rafting. The average air temperature is 15°C, water temperature is 10°C during the day and 8°C during the night. Our rafting itinerary is at least 18-20 days on the May Kha River and you should allow at least 5 extra days to travel from and back to main land Myanmar.

Unlike, Nam Lang River expedition, customers (the groups) required to bring their own full gear. Post and pre-accommodation at Malikha Lodge can be arranged. Please give us at least 2 months advance notice to arrange such itineraries.

Nam Lang River Expedition

(4 night 5 day; starts & ends at Malikha Lodge)

Day 1: Arrive at Putao Airport and transfer to Malikha Lodge. Lunch. Afternoon leisure, swim or spa treatments. Group dinner and drinks at the main lodge in front of the open fireplaces. Briefing on the following days' adventure.

Day 2: An hour drive to Upper Sangaung village and a few kilometres beyond the village into jungle. Then start trekking to Nam Lang Valley. 5-7 hour uphill trekking at a moderate pace. 2 more hour trekking down towards the river camp, lies close to the first river canyon, which is marked by a spectacular rattan and bamboo bridge across the river. Our porters carry all the expedition food and equipment ahead, leaving us free to enjoy this scenic trek through untouched subtropical forest and giant bamboo.

Day 3: (First day rafting): After breakfast, everyone is fitted with their specialist rafting gear. Intensive lessons on river safety and paddling technique by tour leader & safety kayaker. Raft by the remote Lisu village of Nam Ze, at the foot of more snow-capped peaks. This is the last contact with "civilization" before taking an isolated loop into the lower canyons. 2 hours down from this village, we encounter some excellent technical rapids. Then raft down to the final river beach camp at the beginning of second canyon.

Day 4: (Second day rafting): After breakfast, start the final and most challenging day rafting. 1 hour rafting to reach a tight bedrock canyon, where 3 exciting & technical rapids stacked in succession. The trio of rapids ends with a bang in a series of drops between massive boulders. Then 3 hour rafting & leisurely cruise back to Malikha Lodge for a glass of champagne, long hot shower & overnight stay.

Day 5: (Depart Putao): Breakfast, check out and transfer to Putao Airport for your next destination.
